Portia Scabar is in her fifth year at the Alberta University of the Arts, majoring in Glass however, working with many mediums. She is prospective to graduate in the Spring of 2023 with a BFA in Glass. Her practice looks at the connections between humans and plant life with an interest in rhizomatic communities being the foundation for both topics. As a neurodivergent artist, she has found understanding of herself and others through learning about root systems and plants. At times there are sensory and interactive aspects to her work that link directly to coping tools often associated with neurodivergence. She works collaboratively with materials, allowing them to be an active participant in the creation process, this is particularly important while working with glass. As an artist who works frequently in a hot shop much of her energy is focused on how materials can be recycled, while also lowering environmental impact and working towards being as eco-friendly as possible.
